Four great Asian trade collapses

نویسندگان

چکیده

This paper introduces a new dataset of commodity-specific, bilateral import data for four large Asian economies in the interwar period: China, Dutch East Indies, India and Japan. It uses these to describe trade collapses concerned. These resembled post-2008 Great Trade Collapse some respects but not others: they occurred along intensive margin, imports cars were particularly badly affected, durable goods fell by more than those non-durables, except China which rapidly industrialising. On other hand declines geographically imbalanced, while prices important quantities driving overall collapse.

However, the current size of the trade surplus is such that exchange rate policy alone will probably not be able to address the imbalance. The potential reduction in the trade surplus resulting from an increase in the renminbi exchange rate is limited mainly ...

Trade Dynamics in the East Asian

We examine the composition of bilateral trade between the United States and eight Asian Pacific economies from 1962 to 1992. We use a measure of normalized trade balances, developed by Gagnon and Rose (1995). For the ei...

While the majority of these episodes are of short duration, a substantial fraction last for a longer period of time than can be explained as the result of businesscycle dynamics. The duration, depth and associated output loss of these episodes differs dramatically across regions. We investigate the factors associated with th...
